‘Tis the season…

If you’re like most parents the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas are filled with wish lists and shopping sprees for your little ones. But the holiday season can also be a very important time to instill in your children important values. By volunteering and giving back to others that are less fortunate you can help develop your children’s character. As a family you can collect cans, donate and wrap gifts for other children, serve meals at a soup kitchen and many other opportunities if you look in your local community there are ample ways to get involved.

Here are just a few in the South Bay area:

Cheer for Children – Volunteers needed for their Toy Wrapping party on December 13 at the Center for Spiritual Living at 907 Knob Hill Redondo Beach, 90277. In addition, volunteers are needed on December 15th from 1-5 p.m. at Harbor UCLA Hospital (1000 W. Carson Torrance, CA). Volunteers need to arrive by 12 Noon.

Counseling4Kids – Donate a new, unwrapped toy for children in foster care during the holidays. Counseling4Kids will be collecting toys throughout the month of December. You can drop off a toy at their offices at 19701 Hamilton Ave., Suite 160 Torrance, CA 90502 or call (310) 436-8921 for more info.

Harbor Interfaith Services – You can volunteer at their annual Shelter Block Party on Saturday, December 15 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. or help out at their Christmas Distribution of turkeys and food baskets for needy families on December 20th from 2-5 p.m. Contact Alma at (310) 831-0603 ext. 226.

Kiwanis Club of Torrance – Come support and bring the family along to the Western Museum of Flight (3315 Airport Dr Zamperini Field Red Baron Hgr # 3, Torrance, CA) on Saturday, December 15 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. for a Santa’s visit. You can purchase hot chocolate or coffee, check out classic cars and see Santa! Proceeds will benefit the Kiwanis Club of Torrance support of local nonprofits and organizations in the community.

New Challenge Ministries – Help feed the people of the South Bay when you donate canned goods or monetary donations. Please contact New Challenge Ministries for more information on how you can help at (310)320-4171. They are located at 21804 Halldale Ave. Torrance, CA 90501.

Salvation Army, Torrance – Needs volunteers to do bell-ringing as part of their Red Kettle campaign. You can stop by their facilities located at 4223 Emerald Street Torrance, CA 90503 and fill out an application or call and speak with Kathy at (310) 370-4515 for more information.

You and your family can help make the difference for so many this holiday season by getting involved in your local community.
