This was a special week for the Malgeri Family. Our son Michael was given the “Soaring Seahawk” award at the annual Cross Country Banquet. It’s an honor given to the Senior who’s demonstrated the most improvement since Freshman year.
Naturally, when you enter high school on parole and manage to stay out of jail for four years, you’re basically a shoo-in for the accolade. I jest of course in a feeble attempt to hide the overwhelming pride that consumes me.
Hearing his coach’s kind words, not knowing for certain if he was the recipient, and watching Michael’s reaction when his name was called was a moment in time to live again and again and again.
There are side gifts as well on an occasion like this, such as watching the genuine happiness of friends and adults who’ve known of our son’s challenges and who’ve been so good to him.
But the grand prize, held deep in my heart, is both ephemeral in nature yet eternal in meaning…it is his Mother’s tears.
Congratulations Mikey and keep on soaring!
