Ever feel frumpy, dumpy, and all around blah? Hey, we all do! 8 Years ago, I gave birth to my son. The little stinker (and daily caramel sundae’s) made me gain 60 pounds, and I felt like the frumpiest, most useless person in the world. I’d forget rudimentary business details, and just felt plain ol’ fat and sluggish. But bless the nice sales people at a store I went into for saying how fabulous I looked even though I had just given birth. A day or two later someone else said something really nice to me. At first I did what you’ve probably done too…I brushed it off. Denied it. Humphed, and said, “yeah right.” But after the 3rd compliment I had a stroke of genius (yes even in that sleep deprived state). And suddenly I said something foreign. I said…..”Thank you.” That was it. And then I thought, well with all of these nice things people are saying, I’d better write this all down before I forget. And so the Compliment Journal was born!
Okay. So you’ve had a rough day. Everything seems to be going crazy, your world as you know it seems to be exploding all around you (or maybe that’s just your paperwork), and you feel as though you aren’t good at anything today. Crying about it helps a little, but doesn’t really change your mindset.
Grab a notebook, journal, or anything that you can write in (heck, even at the bottom of your daily calendar) where you can record ALL the compliments you receive. If you tend to get compliments on facebook or in emails, save those messages in a “compliment” folder in your email. The point is to have a place where you record what was said, who said it, and when. Start doing this immediately!
Two things will happen when you start practicing this. First of all, you will be much more excited to hear (and more importantly, ACCEPT) kind words from others. Secondly, you will begin to notice a pattern. Often times it’s so hard for you to think of just how fabulous you are right now! Not how fabulous you will be after you loose 20 pounds, or get rid of that zit, or ditch the mom jeans. But how wonderful you are RIGHT NOW and if you just listen for it, you’ll discover that you are really nice, have a great smile, are honest, dedicated, and are a whatever else kind of girl.
After a rough day, you’ll start to feel pretty gosh darn amazing when you open your compliment journal and read what people are saying about you. (It’s especially great when you record compliments from people who normally don’t compliment….then you know it’s really true!)
It’s easy, it’s fun and it’s a great exercise you can also implement into your business. Record the compliments your business receives to see where you and your team shine. You can do it! And if you need any support or encouragement, I’m here for you. Now go out there and have a fabulous day!
