Shrek the Musical, Norris Center for the Performing Arts“Shrek The Musical,” based on the smash hit DreamWorks film, will bring the hilarious story of everyone’s favorite ogre to life on stage at the Norris Theatre for seven performances, February 21 – March 2. Presented by the Norris Center for the Performing Arts’ acclaimed education department, the Tony Award-winning musical comedy is part romance, part twisted fairy tale, and all irreverent fun. Following the Sunday, February 23 matinee performance, the audience is invited to meet and take photos with the characters in the theatre lobby.

“Shrek The Musical” tells the story of the green swamp-dwelling ogre in a faraway kingdom, who embarks on a life-changing adventure in order to reclaim the deed to his land. Joined by a wise-cracking donkey, this unlikely hero fights a fire-breathing, love-sick dragon, rescues the feisty Princess Fiona and learns that real friendship and true love aren’t only found in fairy tales. The film’s entire cast of beloved fairytale misfits, including the diminutive villain, Lord Farquaad, and Gingy, the gingerbread man with attitude, add to the family-friendly fun.

The show features spectacular musical numbers with 17 all-new songs, as well as the cult Shrek anthem, “I’m a Believer.” Pulitzer Prize winner David Linday-Abaire wrote the book and lyrics, with music by Jeanine Tesori.

“Shrek” originated as a 1990 children’s book by famed New Yorker cartoonist William Steig. Like the first 2001 Shrek film, the musical stays true to Steig’s fractured fairytale vision where dragons are friendly, swamps are better than castles, and the true hero isn’t handsome or noble, but a grouchy-on-the-outside, tender-on-the-inside ogre. When “Shrek the Musical” opened in 2008, critics called the show, “Far, far and away, the funniest musical on Broadway!” It received a total of eight Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical and the cast recording of the show was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.

The production features professional sets, lighting and costumes, and is directed by Kris Kyer, with musical direction by Sean Alexander Bart and choreography by Rebecca Castells. The talented student cast of 43 actors includes Austin Kelly (Shrek), Caitlyn Barresi (Fiona), Brandon Halvorsen (Donkey) and Brian Seo (Lord Farquaad).

“Shrek The Musical” is supported, in part, by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission. It is generously sponsored by Redondo Van and Storage, Merrill Lynch Bank of America Corporation – Palos Verdes and the PV Peninsula Rotary Club.
