Day 10 of 20 Gifts In 20 Days

There are over ten million single mothers in the United States, who have experienced a heavy load of disappointing life experiences; including failed marriages, a spouse’s death, the difficult responsibility of raising today’s teens, a wide array of health issues….and perhaps, a few extra pounds. While being a solo parent is challenging, this group of women is not the downtrodden cliché portrayed in the July 14th NYT article, “Two classes divided by ‘I do;” The reporter blasted single moms as an errant demographic, haggard and tired with no time. He went on to state that single moms possess less than stellar parenting skills and lack the financial wherewithal to adequately care for their children compared to their married counterparts.

It’s true many young single women are struggling to raise their children solo, but the entire US population of single mothers simply cannot be put in the same bucket. Two living presidents, Clinton and Obama were raised by single mothers, at some point in their childhood. And the father of our country George Washington; also raised by a single mom. More recently, single moms reared two top US athletes, Gabby Douglas and Michael Phelps. And of course we all know pop icon, Justin Beiber, is a product of a single mother household. The truth is single mothers is a growing demographic with political influence and buying power, acknowledged in a recent Ad Age article,

No one knows this better than twenty-year Emmy Award winning TV producer Kerri Zane. Ten years ago, her long-term marriage failed, her business partnership dissolved, her father passed on, her mother fell seriously ill and her brother was diagnosed with cancer. But as the saying goes, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,” and that is exactly what Zane has become. Today, it is her mission to help other single mothers triumph over life’s seemingly impossible obstacles for an extraordinary life ever after.

Her book, It Takes All 5: A Single Mom’s Guide to Finding The REAL One, published by Morgan James, releasing November 2012; a percentage of proceeds will be donated to a single-mom focused charity, is designed to help single moms like Kerri positively rewrite their personal history, or rescript their lives. She believes if women better understand themselves: healing the inside and out, they can become a healthy, whole new women! Then employing her “5 Finger Philosophy”, they’ll be able to identify not just “the one” but “The REAL One” for a truly authentic and renewable “REAL”ationship!
