Book Review: On Bird Hill

On Bird Hill Cover HQ (1)Following in the footsteps of Jane Yolen’s highly acclaimed OWL MOON, winner of the prestigious Caldecott Award, ON BIRD HILL is a beautiful picture book fancifully illustrated by renowned artist Bob Marstall. The book is the first in a new Jane Yolen series created especially for the Cornel Lab of Ornithology, the leading authority on birds.

What’s Up for Kids received a copy of On Bird Hill by Jane Yolen to review. We loved this book, I had a chance to read it to a group of toddlers and preschoolers recently and they were enthralled by the pictures and the calm, thoughtful words that take the reader on a peaceful walk from the perspective of a child and ends with the perspective of the bird.  Although it is fiction, there is an educational presentation page by page of birds that is fascinating for young children. This would make an excellent addition to a young child’s library and very thoughtful gift for a teacher or school library.

“A sweetly surreal meditation on the everyday wonders that await in the wild.” — Publisher’s Weekly

“An imaginative and original depiction of one of life’s everyday miracles.” — Starred Review – Kirkus Reviews
